 DEMAND SIDE:

Product: Memories

 Media for remembering: Postcards

Since 1875 (a few years after their invention) printed postcards could be mailed with reduced postage worldwide, superseeding the photoprints tourists used to by in the decades before.

Postcards show "sights", so most postcards look just like the photos in travel brochures ("Tourism is the industry where its production is identical with its advertising." (Enzensberger)).

The stages of the development of tourism can be found in the postcards too: From early plain reporting of the favorable views of a place to longing for the bygone times in nostalgic and artistic postcards to self-mocking postcards about the expected tourist experience (multiple-choice-postcards, "Berlin by night"-All-black-postcards)

A large proportion of postcards are not bought to send them off, but to keep as idealized portraits of the places visited, with less intrusion of possible real-life disturbances then in photos taken by the tourists themselves.

 Media for remembering: Photos

Psychological reasons for taking photos:

 - Realization of "The Tourist Gaze": The object is kept at a distance, is "captured on film", but in the chosen perspective - The motif for the travel is the motif.

 - Ersatz-Adventure: "Shooting" objects, hunting down objects (f.i. trainspotters)

 - Playing with technology for adults: Trying to get the ideal photo with the ideal equipment, having the longest teleobjective

 - Having something to do: Taking pictures is a kind of work (preparation, concentration, touchable result), helping to avoid feeling lazy

 - Fighting uncertainty and decay: Putting things in perspective, leaving out what is disturbing, having something which survives the momentary impression

 - Documentation: Having something to show at home which would be difficult to describe, showing that you have been there

 - Ticking-Off: Taking a photo of a site means to have "done" it, it can be ticked off the list

Most people will never in their life take pictures of their hometown, because they are not able to see it in motifs and sights.

Try this out for yourself: Walk through your normal neighbourhood and try to find motifs for photos.

After returning home from vacation, souvenirs will be handed out, pictures will be shown to friends, collegues and family, memorabilia will be put somewhere.

In most cases the "special moments" will not be seen on photos, not reflected in the souvenirs and memorabilia.

Why?

And why do we still take photos, still buy T-shirts which are thrown into a corner at home?
