Case study
Overtourism
The most
discussed
Tourism Topic 2017 in
international
media
has
NOT
been
terrorism but OVERTOURISM.
Buzzwords:
Carrying capacity, Over-crowding, Overtourism
Image of tourism
is still
positive until now: smokestack-free, little investment -
entrepreneurship, peace, understanding, tolerance, happiness,
development, jobs for women.
However
a new critical views gains ground:
destruction of local culture, invasion of cities, pollution from
transportation, overuse of scarce resources (water for golf course)
on islands/dry areas, xenophobia and nationalism rising
Tourism grows in number of travellers, tourism also grows from
season to year-round in cities
Possible solutions (technical, administrative, marketing, product
development):
-
Dispersion
-
Eco-friendly transportation
-
Restrictions of short-term / day travel
-
Establishment of citizens advisory groups
-
“Entrance fee”
-
Other restrictions of access
-
Copenhagen concept
-
…
Organisation of project:
Based on
Research question:
Has tourism reached a tipping point, which could change the
image of tourism from being a positive to being a negative force,
and if so what can the stakeholders do to avoid this happening?
Matrix organization:
a)
Each
participant
“adopts” one city/destination with overtourism problems and reports
regularly about it based on desk-top research, netnography, expert
interviews
b)
Three groups:
Destinations: Barcelona, Venice,
Amsterdam, Berlin, Füssen, Phuket, Maldives. Lucerne,
Beijing, Dubrovnic, Palau, Sri Lanka,
Auckland, Queenstown, Lofoten, Cinque
Terres, Machu Pichu, Santorini, Mount Everest
…
Deliverables: Each student individually report on
his/her destination (8-12
pages), three groups paper 6-8 pages pP
Examination: - Final Presentation
(using PowerPoint, Prezi, MindMap or other visualization tool) - Assignment Papers: Individual destination (8-12 pages) Group paper (6-8 pages per group member) to be handed in before Feb 2, 2018 (60%)
