Managing Diversity

The basic concept of managing diversity accepts that the workforce - and the customers, the suppliers and the local environment - consists of a diverse population of people. Putting the differences to best use for positive results is the task of diversity management.

"Tourism is almost unique in providing multicultural interface at a variety of levels and in many situations simultaneously. It is an everyday experience for a Japanese visitor to London to be checked into a hotel by an Australian receptionist, supervised by an English front manager of Afro-Caribbean origin, in a hotel owned by Middle Eastern financial interests, managed by an American hotel multinational who have appointed an Italian as general manager to the property." (Baum 1996)
