Post-modern travel motivations: Examples film-induced travels and strange events

Sent (Graubünden) from a promotional website:

 ETN newsletter April 6th, 2007:

"Finland offers Finnwacky experiences

It appears Finland tourism has found its niche.  This northern Europe destination is offering unique experiences called "Finnwacky."

This year in Finland, you can sling your spouse or significant other across your back and make like a 19th Century Finnish wife stealer. Or take that Nokia phone and throw it right back to Finland where it came from.  It is the wacky world of annual happenings from a land better known for sophisticated design, Santa Claus, racing and ice hockey stars, midnight sun, and venerated musicians such as Sibelius.

Whether you participate or just want to observe, Finland offers about 40 annual events that range from off beat to way wacky; and the list grows longer each year, Visit Finland said.  These Finnwacky events, which compliment a treasury of more traditional venues, capture the flip and fast developing side of the once shy Finnish personality.

Visit Finland has provided the below Finnwacky list of events occurring this year:

Ninth World Sauna Championships. Test your mettle or sisu as the Finns call it. The men s sauna starts at 230 degrees Fahrenheit and gets kicked up every 30 seconds. Although most Finns take sauna two to four times a week, this competition makes all but the heartiest deliriously punchy. As many as 80 contestants from 16 countries as far away as Kazakstan and Japan participate. The one who can take the heat longest wins. Finland s hottest two day event takes place in Heinola, 4 hour drive north of Helsinki, on August 3 and 4, 2007. http://www.saunaheinola.com/

The Wife-carrying World Championships July 7, 2007 are now part of the three-day Sonkajarvi Festival but harken back to a 19th century "qualification test" requiring damsel snatching used by an elite group of bandits. Through mud and water, rain or shine, the winning couple competes to win the title and prize, the "wife s" weight in beer. Participants include couples from the USA, Europe and Asia. Visitors can partake in a medieval market, karaoke contests, dance hall fun and enjoy wonderful Finnish food. www.sonkajarvi.fi

Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships will be held August 25, 2007 in the Nokia Corporation s home country. Length of throw and style are paramount to winning this coveted medal. The contest takes place in the Lake District town of Savonlinna, site of the renowned Savonlinna Opera Festival. www.savonlinnafestivals.com

The World Championships in Swamp Football raise the status of being bogged down in mud to an international level. Two teams, a stretch of thickly mudded ground and a soccer ball will set the stage for the 10th anniversary play offs to be held in north eastern Finland in Hyrynsalmi July 12-15, 2007. There s no offside rule. If you lose your boots in the mud you can t pause to change or replace them.

Air Guitar Contest: Would-be Jimi Hendrixes and aspiring Brian Mays congregate annually to trade licks and strut their stuff as masters of the phantom instrument. There are training camps , lectures and demonstrations of the sport , as well as the competition itself to be held at the Club Teatria in Oulu in North West Finland. The entire city becomes a rocking party September 5-7, 2007. www.airguitarworldchampionships.com"

 Pre-modern "tourism" - Discovery

Only few rich and/or adventurous travellers

Minimal impact on destinations or infrastructure

Long-time travels (months or years)

Discovery of new places

Unity between travelling and living

Modern tourism - Acquisition

Middle classes (19th c.) and working classes (20th c.) in Europe and North America join rich travellers

Increasing impact on destinations and infrastructure

Medium-time travels (weeks or months)

Acquisition of places

Split between travelling/holidays and living/working

 Post-modern tourism - Invention

Most people living on the planet are hosts and tourists at different times. Tourism becomes universal

Tourism as main source of income for many regions. Traditions designed  after demand. At the same time change from destination to activity as object of travel

Short-time or long-time travels (days or years)

Invention of artificial places

End of split between travelling/holidays and living/working
